Gene Deitch was born as Eugene Merril Deitch in Chicago. He completed his high school education from Los Angeles High School. He started his professional career by working for North American Aviation. After a while, he took pilot training but got contracted with pneumonia and had to choose another career. In the decade of the 50s, he was an audio engineer for Connie Converse, one of the first American singer and songwriters. In the same decade he underwent an apprenticeship at the animation studio United Productions of America (UPA). After that, he started working as a creative director at the famous studio Terrytoons. He was the architect of creating famous cartoons such as Gaston Le Crayon, Clint Cobber, and Sidney the Elephant. In the decade of the 1960s, he directed Popeye and Tom & Jerry which are popular to date as well.

During the same decade, he relocated to Prague and worked with William L. Snyder and directed Tom & Jerry, and Oscar Winning Munro among others. From 1969 till 2008, he was the leading animation director for the Connecticut organization Weston Woods Studios. He also started his own studio in Prague and made sure his animated characters reach every household across the globe. He also won various awards over the course of his decorated career and most notable of them being  Annie Awards’ Winsor McCay Award by ASIFA-Hollywood for a lifetime contribution to the animation.
