Viju Khote was born as Vittal Bapurao Khote on 17-12-1941 in Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra, India. He was an Indian Film Actor, Television Actor, Theatre Actor & Comedian. He was known for his work in Marathi & Hindi movies/television series. He is most remembered for his dacoit Kalia in Ramesh Sippy’s blockbuster film Sholay.
Actor Viju Khote was born in a family of actors and hence he too decided to become an actor. He started his career by performing in Marathi theatre and finally got a break in films through the Marathi film Ya Malak in the year 1964. After appearing in few more Marathi films, he finally made his Bollywood debut through Asit Sen’s film Anokhi Raat in the year 1968. After playing petty roles in films like Ganwaar, Shareef Budmaash, and Insaaniyat, he became a household name in India after his performance as Kalia in the cult classic film Sholay. His dialogue “Sardar maine aapka namak khaya hai” became immortal.
During the decade of the 1980s, he started playing comedian roles and became one of the most sought after comedian of Hindi films then. His performance in the film Andaz Apna Apna as Robert earned him a lot of accolades. In a career that spanned over 5 and a hald decade, he appeared in over 300 films including Hindi and Marathi films.
In addition to films, he was also a renowned star of small screen. Among all the series that he worked in, he is most remembered for his performance in the television series Zabaan Sambhalke.
He died on 30-09-2019 in Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra, India. He died at the age of 77 due to Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS).
