Vidya was born on January 1, 1979, in Bombay (now Mumbai), into a Tamil Brahmin family. Her father, P. R. Balan, holds the position of executive vice-president at Digicable, while her mother, Saraswathy Balan, is a homemaker. Vidya has mentioned that they converse in Palakkad Tamil at home. Her elder sister, Priya Balan, is employed in advertising. Additionally, the actress Priyamani is her second cousin.

Growing up in the suburban area of Chembur, Mumbai, Vidya attended St. Anthony Girls’ High School. From a young age, she harbored aspirations of a career in the film industry, drawing inspiration from the performances of actors like Shabana Azmi and Madhuri Dixit. At the age of 16, she made her acting debut in the first season of Ekta Kapoor’s sitcom “Hum Paanch” as Radhika, a bespectacled teenager. Despite receiving an offer from director Anurag Basu to star in a television soap opera after the sitcom concluded, Vidya declined as she was determined to focus on a career in films.
