Tottenham were left stunned by two headers in the final 11 minutes as the Saints beat them by 3 goals to 2 after a dramatic 90 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
Southampton dominated the first half carving out 15 attempts at Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris versus only 2 by Tottenham. Bednarek was unlucky for an own goal in the 18th minute to undo Southampton’s hard work. The Saints came right back at them with a goal from Armando Broja in the 23rd minute to set up a tense first half for Tottenham.
In the second half, Heung Min Son turned home a Lucus Moura cross in the 70th minute to give Spurs the lead. Southampton equalised through Elyounoussi in the 79th minute and then took the lead through Che Adams in the 82nd minute through Ward-Prouse crosses.
More VAR Drama
VAR was again in question as Spurs had a goal disallowed in stoppage time following Stevin Bergwin’s header ruled offside.
Broja was the victim of serious aerial challenges from Emerson Royal as he stayed on the pitch even after a series of critical offences.
More Pain for Antonio Conte’s Tottenham
Antonio Conte was unhappy with his side’s performance as they slipped at home yet again. The lacklustre performance and a weak defence exposed the issues at Tottenham that still need sorting. He was exasperated by the amount of chances given to the opposition and was seen kicking a water cooler in the Tottenham dugout.
Whether Tottenham can challenge for the Champions League still needs to be seen.
