Shilpa Rao Personal life & Career :

Born on 11 April 1984 in Jamshedpur, Shilpa Rao was originally named Apeksha Rao but later chose to go by Shilpa, citing a stronger connection to the name due to its association with art. As a child, she began her singing journey under the guidance of her father, S Venkat Rao, a music degree holder, who imparted lessons on understanding the intricacies of various ragas. Describing her father’s teaching approach as both casual and effective, Rao expressed that it was tailored to spark her interest.

For her schooling, Rao attended Little Flower School and Loyola School in Jamshedpur, where she actively participated in the school’s choir group. In 1997, she, along with her family, moved to Mumbai, where she pursued a postgraduate diploma in statistics at the University of Mumbai.

During her college years, Rao crossed paths with Mithoon, who invited her to record the song “Tose Naina” for the movie Anwar (2007). Describing it as her “most innocent rendition,” Rao expressed deep personal attachment to the song, stating, “This song is extremely close to my heart and has taught me what thrill and gratitude of music is and can be”. Although Rao considers “Tose Naina” her official debut, it’s worth noting that the soundtrack of the film Ek Ajnabee (2005) features a semi-instrumental track titled “Stranger On The Prowl,” incorporating Rao’s alap. She collaborated with Mithoon on two other projects that year, Aggar and The Train. While “Sehra” from the former received negative reactions from music critics, both “Woh Ajnabee” and “Teri Tamanna” from the latter were well-received, with Raja Sen from particularly praising Rao’s “strong vocals.
