Saranya Ponvannan was born 26 April 1969 in Alappuzha, Kerala, India. She is a popular South Indian film actress who has mainly performed in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam language films and Kannada language films. She has also played the role of villain in Achamindri.
She went on an eight year leave after that she made a comeback to movies in 2003 Alai.
In 2014, she launched Design & School of Fashion Technology at Virugamakkam, Chennai.

She was born in a Christian family at Alappuzha, She is a daughter of Malayalam film director A. B. Raj who directed over 75 films. She married actor and director Rajasekar in 1988 and later got divorced in 1989. She then married to actor and director Ponvannan in 1995 and has two daughters with him.

She made her first entrance in Telugu film 1988 Neerajanam. In 1996 almost during the end of her career as a lead actress she debuted in Kannada cinema in Appaji. After marriage in 1995, she leave acting. In 2000 she seemed playing the lead role in the comedy television series, Veettukku Veedu Lootty. After a long break from films she made a comeback in 2003. Since then she has appeared in many films in supporting roles.
