Born on 25 February 1992 in Delhi to a Punjabi Hindu family, Malhotra is a trained dancer specializing in contemporary and ballet styles. Following her graduation from Gargi College, she entered the dance reality show Dance India Dance, reaching the top 100 contestants. Sanya Malhotra Actress Career

Malhotra was chosen for the biographical sports film Dangal directed by Nitesh Tiwari, alongside fellow newcomer Fatima Sana Shaikh. Despite her initial lack of knowledge about wrestling, she dedicated herself to learning the nuances by watching videos on wrestling techniques, studying the movements, walks, and body language of wrestlers, and undergoing training. Both Malhotra and Shaikh underwent five rounds of auditions, physical training, and workshops conducted by Tiwari and Aamir Khan, with coaching from former wrestler Kripa Shankar Patel Bishnoi. Dangal, released in 2016, garnered critical acclaim and emerged as the highest-grossing Indian film, earning over ₹2,000 crore (US$250 million) worldwide. Anupama Chopra praised Malhotra’s performance, stating that she provided “strong support” to the story. Additionally, Malhotra showcased her choreography skills by choreographing the song “Sexy Baliye” for the film Secret Superstar (2017), featuring Aamir Khan.

Two years later, Malhotra took on a prominent role in Vishal Bhardwaj’s drama Pataakha (2018), co-starring newcomer Radhika Madan. Based on Charan Singh Pathik’s short story “Do Behnen,” the film revolves around the tumultuous relationship between two sisters in Rajasthan. To prepare for their roles, both Malhotra and Madan immersed themselves in the lives of the characters’ real inspirations, staying in Ronsi village near Jaipur, learning the Rajasthani dialect, and mastering tasks such as milking buffaloes, thatching roofs, plastering walls with dung, and carrying water-filled matkas on their heads. They also underwent a weight gain of 10 kg for authenticity. Critic Raja Sen commended Malhotra as a “fearless actress” who portrayed her character with “unhinged enthusiasm.” In the same year, she played a supporting role in Amit Sharma’s critically and commercially successful comedy Badhaai Ho, starring Ayushmann Khurrana.
