Makhanlal Chaturvedi Biography!! Pandit Makhanlal Chaturvedi also called Pandit ji, he was an Indian poet, writer, essayist, playwright and a journalist Pandit ji is particularly remembered for his participation in India’s national struggle for independence and his contribution to Chhayavaad, the Neo-romanticism movement of Hindi literature.

Pandit ji was awarded the first Sahitya Akademi Award in Hindi for his work Him Tarangini in 1955. The Government of India awarded Pandit ji the civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan in 1963. For his works reinforcing Indian nationalism during the British Raj, Pandit ji is referred to as the Yug Charan.

Makhanlal Chaturvedi Early Life

Makhanlal Chaturvedi was born on 4 April 1889, in Babai [Makhan Nagar] village of Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh. Chaturvedi became a schoolteacher when he was aged 16. Later, Chaturvedi was the editor of the nationalist journals Prabha, Pratap and Karmaveer, and was repeatedly incarcerated during the British Raj. After the Indian independence, Chaturvedi refrained from seeking a position in the government, instead continuing to speak and write against social evils and in support of an exploitation-free, equitable society as envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi.

Pandit Makhanlal Chaturvedi Career

After 1910, Chaturvedi became the editor of various nationalistic journals such as ‘Prabha’ and later, ‘Karmaveer’. Possessing a great patriotic fervour, Chaturvedi had the spark to instigate the masses with his dynamic speeches and writings. Chaturvedi presided over the All India Hindi Sahitya Sammelan held at Hardar in 1943. He was a son of India whose ‘true Indian spirit’ infused hope and anticipation in the masses. Chaturvedi sensitive portrayal of the common man’s plight in works such as ‘Him Kirtini’, ‘Him Tarangini’, ‘Kaisa Chhand Banaa Deti hei’, ‘Amar Rashtra’ and ‘Pushp ki Abhilaasa’ find an audience even till date. With notable contribution to the Hindi literature, Chaturvedi earned an honorary ‘D.Lit.’ from Sagar University and was the first individual to win the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in the year 1955.
