Lohri is one of the popular festival of Punjab Haryana region. It is known as the harvest festival of Punjab.
Lohri is widely known to mark the peak winter, this festival is historically related to the harvest of the rabi crops …. And thus, For Punjabi farmers Lohri is like New Year, they see the day after Lohri as money year.
Date and day of Lohri
The Lohri festival date in 2020 will be the same as every year on 13th January, on the day just before Makar Sankranti.
How its celebrate
People arrange a bonfire in their yard, people gathered and throw popcorns, puffed rice, peanuts and sweets into the bonfire, People also do the puja consists of six food items, revri & gajak,, phuliya and popcorn. After that people have to perform parikrama (9 times) of the bonfire. One of the best part in lohri is men perform bhangra and women’s perform gidda. In Punjab there is a custom to eat sarson da saag and makki di roti.
We also also called lohri – Lal Loi. Punjabi women go around the fire with singing and dancing on the Lohri folk songs
