Born on February 7, 1990, Keshav Athmanand Maharaj is a professional cricketer hailing from South Africa. Known for his expertise, Maharaj is a key member of the South Africa national cricket team, showcasing his skills in Test matches, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Currently, he holds the position of vice-captain in the limited-overs format.

Specializing as a left-arm orthodox spin bowler and contributing as a lower-order batsman, Maharaj commenced his first-class cricket journey with KwaZulu-Natal in 2006. His Test debut for South Africa occurred in November 2016. In domestic cricket, he represents Dolphins, and in the SA20, he plays for Durban’s Super Giants.

In a historic moment in September 2021, Maharaj took on the role of captaincy for South Africa in ODIs against Sri Lanka. Not only did he make his T20 International debut against Sri Lanka in the same month, but he also captained the team in his inaugural T20I match. Adding to his impressive achievements, Maharaj secured a hat-trick in a Test match against West Indies in June 2021, becoming the second bowler from South Africa to accomplish this feat.

Born into a Hindu family on February 7, 1990, in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Keshav Maharaj is the child of Athmanand Maharaj and Kanchan Mala. Maharaj’s roots trace back to India, with his great-grandfather originally hailing from Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and migrating to Durban in 1874 as an indentured labourer. His father, Athmanand Maharaj, distinguished himself as a wicketkeeper for KwaZulu-Natal, and Keshav has a sister named Tarisma.

In April 2022, Maharaj celebrated his union with Lerisha Munsamy, a kathak dancer, whom he had been with for an extended period.

Keshav Maharaj Cricketer Domestic & International Career

Maharaj commenced his first-class cricket journey at the young age of 16, debuting for KwaZulu-Natal in the 2006–07 season. In the 2009-10 season, he transitioned to represent the Dolphins team. Maharaj showcased his skills on the international stage when he toured Bangladesh with the South Africa A team in April–May 2010, impressively claiming 13 wickets in the two four-day matches against the Bangladesh Cricket Board team. Notably, he also delivered a notable performance by taking 4 for 12 off four overs while opening the bowling in one of the T20 matches. His contributions extended to playing for South Africa A against the touring Bangladesh A team in the 2010–11 season.

In October 2016, Maharaj earned a spot in South Africa’s squad for their series against Australia. Making his Test debut against Australia on 3 November 2016, he took three wickets and achieved the distinction of being the first specialist spinner to make his Test debut at Perth.

On 10 March 2017, Maharaj achieved a significant milestone by securing his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests against New Zealand. This accomplishment marked only the seventh instance of a South African spinner achieving a five-for in Tests against New Zealand. Subsequently, in April 2017, Maharaj received recognition by being named in South Africa’s One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against England and the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. He made his ODI debut for South Africa against England on 27 May 2017.

Maharaj’s outstanding performances didn’t go unnoticed, as he was honored with the International Newcomer of the Year award at Cricket South Africa’s annual awards in May 2017. In October 2017, he reached the milestone of taking his 50th wicket in Tests during the first Test against Bangladesh.
