Arjun Erigaisi is a spectacular prodigy in the world of elite chess, where strategy, intellect, and commitment all come together. He received the title of grandmaster at the age of 14 years, 11 months, and 13 days, making him the 32nd youngest grandmaster ever. He is India’s 54th grandmaster. He won the Indian National Championship in 2022.

Early life and background

He was born in the city of Warangal. His father is a neurosurgeon, and his mother is a stay-at-home mom. He learned to play chess at the BS Chess Academy in Hyderabad.

Career

Arjun earned a silver medal in the Asian Youth Championships in Korea in 2015. In 2018, he became the state of Telangana’s first grandmaster.

Arjun Erigaisi had a successful year in 2021, being the first Indian to qualify for the Goldmoney Asian Rapid of the Champions Chess Tour 2021 ahead of Alireza Firouzja, Daniil Dubov, Peter Svidler, and Vidit Gujrathi, only losing in tie breaks against Levon Aronian in a hard-fought match.

Arjun finished second in the Junior U21 Round Table Open Chess Championship (Classical) in Bulgaria in October 2021. He and Alexey Sarana both scored 7/9. Arjun finished third out of 82 players at the Lindores Abbey Blitz Tournament in Riga in November 2021, ahead of Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Levon Aronian, David Navara, Daniil Dubov, Peter Svidler, and many others.

Arjun won the 28th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival in August 2022 with 7.5/9 and a performance rating of 2893. Arjun won Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Blitz with 12.5/18 in December 2022, his third triumph in Tata Steel competitions to far.
