Controversy Though he was named as the Indian cricket team coach in June 2016, in early 2017, there were many reports that were doing rounds hinting at differences between Kumble and Virat Kohli. However, prior to the Champions Trophy 2017, when the BCCI published an advertisement for the post of men’s Indian cricket team coach, Anil felt deeply hurt and decided to discontinue his coaching job, and on 21 June 2017, Anil gave his resignation from the post of the Indian cricket team coach.

In a remarkable display of skill and dominance against Pakistan in 1999, Kumble achieved a rare feat by dismissing all ten batsmen in a single Test match innings, a feat previously accomplished only by England’s Jim Laker. Despite not being known for prodigious turn, Kumble’s mastery lay in his ability to generate pace, bounce, and maintain impeccable accuracy. Kumble’s excellence was duly recognized when he was named Cricketer of the Year in Indian Cricket in 1993, and later honored as one of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year in 1996. His contributions were pivotal in India’s joint victory with Sri Lanka in the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy, where he played an integral role as a member of the Indian squad.

Born into a family in Bangalore, Mysore State (now Karnataka), Anil Kumble’s parents, Krishna Swamy and Saroja, originated from Kumbla near Kasaragod, Kerala. He has a brother named Diinesh Kumble. Anil is married to Chetana Kumble and is blessed with three children: a son named Mayas Kumble and two daughters named Aaruni and Svasti Kumble. His mother tongue is Kannada.

Anil Kumble Career

Kumble initiated his first-class career for Karnataka against Hyderabad on November 30, 1989, where he showcased his potential by capturing 4 wickets despite enduring a pair with the bat. His talent soon earned him a spot in the India Under-19s team, where he impressed against Pakistan Under-19s with scores of 113 and 76 in consecutive tests. Subsequently, he made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka during the Austral-Asia Cup in Sharjah on April 25, 1990, contributing with two wickets in the series against Pakistan.

His Test debut arrived in the same year during India’s tour of England for a three-test series. In the second test held at Manchester, Kumble exhibited his prowess by claiming 3 wickets in the first innings but remained wicketless in the second innings, resulting in a draw. Despite the debut, he had to wait until 1992 for his next Test opportunity.
