Ameen Sayani Biography

Ameen Sayani (21 December 1932 – 20 February 2024) was a renowned Indian radio announcer. He gained immense fame and popularity throughout the Indian Subcontinent for his iconic Binaca Geetmala program broadcasted on Radio Ceylon. Sayani was widely admired and often imitated for his unique style of addressing the audience with “Behno aur Bhaiyo” (meaning “sisters and brothers”), a departure from the traditional “Bhaiyo aur Behno,” adding a melodious touch to his announcements. Since 1951, he had an impressive portfolio, having produced, hosted, or provided voice-overs for over 54,000 radio programs and 19,000 spots/jingles. Sayani passed away due to a heart attack on 20 February 2024, at the age of 91.

National Radio Shows • Cibaca Geetmala (formerly Binaca Geetmala): Since 1952, this show was aired over Radio Ceylon and Vividh Bharati (AIR) for almost 42 years. After a 4 years gap, the show was again revived and aired over Vividh Bharati as Colgate Cibaca Geetmala for 2 years.
• S. Kumar Ka Filmy Muqaddama and Filmi Mulaqaat: The show was famous on Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and then Vividh Bharati for almost 7 years.
• Saridon Ke Saathi: This was the first sponsored show of AIR. He presented the show for 4 years.
• Bournvita Quiz Contest (in English): He took over the show in 1975, after the death of his guru and elder brother, Hamid Sayani.

Ameen Sayani Biography

Ameen Sayani’s introduction to All India Radio, Bombay, came through his brother Hamid Sayani. He spent a decade participating in English programs there before becoming instrumental in popularizing All India Radio across India.

In addition to his radio work, Sayani also had a presence in various movies over the years, including Bhoot Bungla, Teen Devian, Boxer, and Qatl, where he portrayed the role of an announcer at different events.

Beyond his entertainment endeavors, Sayani contributed to societal betterment by assisting his mother, Kulsum Sayani, in editing, publishing, and printing RAHBER, a fortnightly journal aimed at neo-literates. This publication, active from 1940 to 1960, was printed simultaneously in Devnagri (Hindi), Urdu, and Gujarati scripts, all in the simple “Hindustani” language advocated by Mahatma Gandhi.

Since childhood, Ameen Sayani actively supported his mother, a dedicated social activist, in all aspects of editing, printing, and publishing the journal Rehber from 1940 to 1960.

At the tender age of 8, his brother Hamid Sayani introduced him to the English section of AIR (All India Radio) at the Mumbai station. Ameen then embarked on his career as a Radio Announcer for English programs, swiftly gaining popularity in the field.

Subsequently, he transitioned to broadcasting in Hindi, seizing an opportunity provided by Radio Ceylon. Reflecting on this shift in an interview.
